UK: Air Pressure Testing
ABOUT AIR PRESSURE TESTING
Air leakage, also known as air permeability or air infiltration, arises when air leaks out of or into a building through cracks and gaps in the building envelope. Air leakage can produce unwanted draughts. More seriously, it can increase the energy consumption of a building, and hence its C)2 emissions.
UK Building Regulations now require a proportion of all new domestic buildings to be tested for air tightness. This is as part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions. Guidance on the requirement is contain in the following section of the UK Building Regulations: Approved Document Part L1A - Conservation of Fuel and Power in New Dwellings.
Air pressure tests are normally carried out during the construction and commissioning process of a new building, when the external envelope is fully complete, with external doors and windows in place.
