ABOUT BASEMENT WATERPROOFING
The most common form of leak in a basement is at the joint between the floor and the wall. This is much more usual than a leak directly up through the floor, and is caused by the build up of water pressure around the basement.
The three main types of basement waterproofing are tanking, cavity drainage, and exterior foundation drains.
Tanking consists of a waterproof material bonded directly to the inside or outside of the basement walls and floor. It produces a waterproof skin all around the basement. Great care must be taken in making any fixings through this membrane, for which special fixings are needed.
In cavity drainage, a dimpled plastic membrane is applied to the walls and floors of the basement. This creates a drained space around the dimples. Water entering that drained space is diverted to a collecting point and is pumped out.
Exterior foundation drainage drains water away from the basement by gravity. It has the advantage that it does not depend on electricity or pumps. This technique is often used in conjunction with a waterproof membrane applied to the basement walls.
