ABOUT BRISE SOLEIL, SOLAR SHADING & LOUVRE SUPPLIERS
Brise soleil is a French term for a permanent sun shade used, mainly in tropical or Mediterranean climates, outside an external wall to provide solar shading to reduce glare and heat including solar gain. Brise soleil are normally made up of horizontal or vertical brise soleil louvres, or may take the form of a decorative solar shading screen wall.
Brise soleil may be needed to reduce solar heat gain through solar shading, to prevent glare from the sun and localised thermal discomfort due to the sun shining on occupants, and to reduce or eliminate sky glare. Some shading devices may not combine all these roles effectively. For example, low transmission glazing will reduce solar heat gain and sky glare, but has little effect on direct glare from the sun because of the high intensity of the sun's rays. Conversely, internal solar shading devices such as Venetian blinds can eliminate glare from sky and sun but are less effective than brise soleil at reducing solar heat gain.

For most interiors it may be acceptable to restrict summer sunlight using fixed parts of the building such as balconies or overhanging roofs or by fixed louvres or screens forming brise soleil. For east and west facing facades, adjustable shading is often better suited to the low solar altitudes of the UK. Shading, especially fixed brise soleil shading, should not be designed to that it reduces interior daylighting, natural ventilation or a view. The amount of sunlight blocked by fixed shading devices such as brise soleil can be estimated using a sunpath diagram such as the BRE Sunlight Availability Protractor.
