ABOUT CARPETS

The main types of carpet and carpet material are described below:

Axminster & Wilton Woven Carpets. Unlike tufted carpets, Axminster and Wilton carpets are woven. Any pattern is woven into the carpet, as opposed to being printed onto the finished carpet (as is the case with tufted carpets). Normally made of wool or wool/nylon mixture, both Axminster and Wilton carpets are extremely hard wearing, and cope well with dirt and stains.

Twist Pile Tufted Carpets. Twist pile carpets generally have a short pile, to avoid flattening and shading. The extra twist given to the yarn helps it to spring back after being walked upon.

Cut Pile Tufted Carpets. Cut pile tufted carpets have a smooth shallow texture. The most dense and smooth versions are described as velvet carpets. The carpet is manufactured in white yarn, and the colours and patterns are printed on.

Loop Pile Tufted Carpets. Loop pile carpets present continuous rows of loops, rather as in a knitted garment. The loops readily spring back after being walked on, and produce a very hardwearing carpet. Care needs to be taken with pets and high heeled shoes to avoid the loops being caught. When loop pile tufted carpets are used on stairs the backing is liable to show through on the stair nosing, a phenomenon known as grinning.

Wool (Wool/Nylon Mix). Wool is the most long-lasting material for carpet manufacture. It can be dyed easily, and is comfortable to the foot. It is also less flammable than synthetic materials. To improve wearing characteristics, wool is often mixed 80/20 with nylon.

Polypropylene. Polypropylene is a good choice where stain resistance is important. The material is dyed during manufacture, and is effectively stain proof. It is not prone to the build-up of static, and does not fade easily.

Nylon (Polyamide). Nylon has improved in recent years as a carpet material. It is now less prone to static, and is extremely hard wearing. It can be cleaned easily, but does not have the feel and comfort of a wool carpet.
