ABOUT DAMP PROOF MEMBRANES

A damp proof membrane is a wide layer of impervious material, such as mastic asphalt or plastic sheet underlay, which is laid under a ground slab and up the outside of buried external walls. A damp proof membrane is similar to tanking, but is not made to resist water under pressure.

Surface damp proof membranes are damp proof membranes laid on top of a ground slab, usually made of mastic asphalt and trowelled smooth as a base for thin floor finishes.
