LEADING UK FIRE PROTECTION SUPPLIERS

The rate of growth of a fire in a building is determined partly by the nature and disposition of the contents of the fire compartment and partly by the design of the building and the materials from which it is constructed. The type of materials used in wall and ceiling linings can affect the rate of growth of fire. Combustible building boards are often used as internal linings to walls and ceilings but the fire risk associated with these can be reduced by treatment with fire retardant paints. Timber or plywood with a density of more than 400 kg per square metre, whether painted or unpainted, will give Class 3 fire resistance, but this can be improved to Class 1 or even Class 0 (non-combustible) with proprietary fire protection treatments. Paper faced plasterboard, although technically combustible, is designated Class 0.

Fibre reinforced calcium silicate insulating boards have been developed as a direct alternative to the asbestos boards formerly used for special fire resisitng applications. They have similar properties but do not contain asbestos fibre. Fibre reinforced gypsum (GRG) is available in thinner sheets than plasterboard, but gives a similar Class 0 fire resistance.

To provide fire protection around internal timber doors, intumescent strip will need to be provided in the edge of the door or frame. This will seal the gap in the event of fire, and can achieve 30 minutes fire protection.

Fire protection can be provided using intumescent paint, such as that supplied by Aquafire. Paints for intumescent fire protection can be applied in either coloured or clear form to wooden parts of buildings. They provide the Class 1 and Class 0 fire protection specified in UK building regs. Aquafire FRC intumescent paint is water based, which allows it to be applied to occupied buildings without producing unpleasant smells. Aquafire's fire protection paints can be supplied in satin, matt and gloss versions.
