Fireplaces are available in a very wide range of styles from Georgian and Victorian to modern minimalist 'hole-in-the-wall' designs. Traditional fireplaces are manufactured in the original materials, including cast iron and ceramic tiles. Other materials include hardwood, granite, natural stone, and stainless steel.

Most fireplaces can be fitted to use wood, coal, gas, or electricity. Very realistic effects are possible with gas, and electric fireplaces also provide increasingly realistic imitations of wood or coal fires.

Fireplaces may be bought as combination sets. Alternatively the fireplace insert, the fireplace basket, and the surrounding panels and mantel may be bought separately. Standard and custom designs are available.
