ABOUT FLOOR SCREEDS
Floor screeds are an in-situ flooring of cement mortar laid to an accurate flat surface by screeding, or by self-leveling, usually as the base for a separate floor finish to topping. Making floor screeds involves passing a floor screed board across a surface while also working it lengthways to-and-fro, so that the floor screed mortar is levelled, and all material that is higher than the floor screed rails is struck off.
Floor screed types such as the separate (bonded), unbonded, and floating screed vary from 40mm to 75mm thick, while monolithic screeds are thinner. The floor screed mix has from 1:3 to 1:4.5 cement:sand. Suppliers can provide ready-mixed floor screed suitable for placing by barrow or by a screed pump. Screeds are laid on the structural floor and usually have no reinforcement. When used as the sub-floor for thin floor finishes they are laid in large areas, and their surface is compacted and smoothed by a power float.

It is expensive to lay a floor screed to high standards of tolerance for level and flatness. Drainage from a flat roof or wet area is frequently by a screed to falls. Laying floor screeds is a wet trade and floor screeds need curing, then time for drying out. Suspended timber floors are not an ideal base for a floor screed, but can be used if they are rigid and have a damp-proof membrane on top and adequate ventilation below.
In addition to simple cement sand floor screeds, more sophisticated specialist floor screeds are available.
