A joist is a wooden or steel beam directly supporting flooring or a ceiling lining, together with other joists. Joists are either full-length intermediate joists (running the full distance from wall to wall), trimmer joists, trimmed joists or trimming joists.

A trimmer joist is a short floor joist which encloses one side of a rectangular hole in a wooden floor, carrying the full-length joists which are cut off for the hole (trimmed joists). Another trimmer joist may form the side opposite and parallel to it. A trimming joist is a floor joist parallel to the other joists, usually the same depth, but possibly thicker. It is fixed with another trimming joist, in pairs, one each side of a hole in a timber floor, and carries trimmer joists, which themselves carry the trimmed joists.
