Lintels (or lintols) are short beams over a door or window head, usually carrying a wall load only. Lintels for a cavity wall are usually made of powder coated pressed steel, or as a precast concrete boot lintel. Lintels should have a drip so that alkaline water from masonry falls clear of glass or anodizing.

Catnic, which is part of the Corus group, is a leading supplier of lintels. Catnic advises that the lintel should be wider than the opening by 150 millimetres on each side. In the case of CXL lintels, this overlap should be increased to 200 millimetres. In severe exposure zones (zones 3 and 4 in the BS 8104 map) Catnic lintels require a separate damp proof course. In other areas this is not required.
