UK: Modular Buildings: Modular Building Suppliers

ABOUT MODULAR BUILDINGS

Modular buildings are pre-fabricated buildings which are made up of complete room-sized modular units stacked on top of each other. The modular units are made in a factory, with all internal fittings and fixings, including electrical wiring, being installed in the factory. The advantages of modular buildings are the speed of construction, and the quality of workmanship that can be achieved by undertaking the construction in factory conditions.

Transport considerations limit the size of the units, and sound insulation requires very careful consideration in what is inevitably light construction.

The leading UK suppliers of modular buildings, described below the panel of sponsored links, have comprehensive websites with illustrated online catalogues and details of product specifications for modular buildings.

LEADING UK MODULAR BUILDING SUPPLIERS

Yorkon is a leading supplier of modular buildings. It is a subsidiary of Portakabin, which is one of the UK's largest suppliers of portable temporary buildings. Portakabin is in turn part of the Shepherd Building Group, a leading family-owned building contractor based in York. Sheperd has more than 4,000 staff. Yorkon's pre-fabricated modular buildings are designed to have the benefits of controlled factory conditions for manufacture, but to produce buildings which do not look industrial. Although initially Yorkon modular buildings were used for urgent practical applications, for example at factories or airports, they are now increasingly being used by architects to create housing developments of high design standard.

Elliott Group is a leading supplier of modular buildings. Elliot modular buildings have a structure of galvanized steel, and may be stacked up to three stories high. A recent example of an Elliott modular building project is the crew facilities building at Southampton Airport, which contains 39 modules over three storeys.
