Partitions are walls between rooms, non-loadbearing and generally one storey high. Partitions can be built in an enormous variety of ways, the commonest being plastered brick or blockwork, but dry construction is possible, which is ususal for demountable partitions. Partitions can also be framed or made of woodwool or strawboard, with various coverings and infillings. They are mainly used in office buildings to make group or cellular workplaces. Woodwool slab is a panel product made of long thin strands of wood that are mixed with cement and compressed in a mould to bind them together. The surface of woodwool partitions can be skim-coated or plastered, which lowers sound absorption but increases the resistance to sound transmission. Since woodwool slabs are alkaline, alkali-resistant paint may be needed. Strawboard is a panel product made of straw hot-pressed on edge, encased in strong paper, sometimes containing voids fro 20mm conduit. The straw can have boron insecticide treatment. Facings are plain or showerproof, or for a gypsum plaster skim coat. Cut edges should be protected from moisture, mould and insects with a PVA liquid sealer.
Optima is a leading supplier of partitions. It supplies particularly partitions made entirely of glass. These can either be framed in aluminium, or constructed without vertical frames, using a silicone sealant for the vertical joints. Partitions can be curved or facetted as well as straight. Sound insulation up to RW 39db can be provided. The aluminium frames can be anodised for a natural aluminium look, can be powder coated in any colour, or can be treated to have a stainless steel appearance. The glass may have patterns applied through the application of glazing film, and through blasting with sand.
Avanti specialise in re-locatable partitions with metal frames. Their Matrix partition is a versatile non-loadbearing relocatable partitioning system for internal use. Manufactured by Epsilon Avanti, the partition system is based on an aluminium framework 50mm (nominal) thick. Solid partition modules consist of an aluminium framework combined with composite panels constructed from a 27mm thick honeycomb core faced on either side with a skin of 9.5mm thick plasterboard. Glazed partition panels are constructed using various aluminium or plastic sections to create single and double glazed modules. Skirtings may be plastic or aluminium from 75mm to 150mm in height. Aluminium partition sections are satin anodised or powder coated to any colour in the BS or RAL ranges.
