ABOUT PRECAST CONCRETE

The leading types of precast concrete are precast concrete hollow floors, precast concrete solid floors, precast concrete stairs, and precast concrete structural frames.

Hollow core floors. Bison Hollow Core Floors are manufactured using a long line casting technique with automatic casting equipment which places high strength, low water/cement ratio concrete under a high degree of vibration and compaction. The section profile incorporates hollow cores to reduce self-weight without significant reduction in section stiffness. Reinforcement is by high tensile prestressing strand or wire which has an ultimate strength of more than 3 times that of conventional high tensile reinforcement.

Precast Stairs. Precast concrete staircases are the ideal solution to the provision of stairs in any structure. Well designed stairs are a key element in any successful construction programme. Bison are able to provide any bespoke configuration of precast stair to suit a clients requirement. Bison factories are equipped with a sophisticated range of standard but fully adjustable moulds which will accommodate almost any stair layout.

Solid Composite Floors. A solid prestressed plank element, normally 75mm or 100mm thick and manufactured by the same method as Hollow Core and used in conjunction with a structural insitu topping. Solid Composite Construction utilises the advantages of a prestressed precast element acting compositely with an insitu structural topping and thus combines the practical and design benefits of precast and insitu construction. This construction method provides the designer with the scope to incorporate all the details normally associated with insitu construction, such as tying in of balconies and trimming of openings, maximum load distribution and minimum structural depth.

Structural Frames. Structural frames in precast concrete offer a solution for a wide variety of structures including commercial buildings, car parks, housing, factories, hotels and student accommodation. Generally frames can be of the beam and column type which may include some walling for diaphragm purposes in for example a commercial office development or may be almost entirely of walling in a hotel structure. Precast walls manufactured by Bison are generally of structural grade normal weight concrete cast in storey height panels and to a length to suit the architectural layout and the available handling facilities.

Where buildings are designed with a cellular structure - for example multi-storey hotels, prisons or accommodation blocks - the use of Bison Cross Wall precast concrete construction affords the benefits of speed and on-site productivity without the need for extensive deployment of site labour and volume of loose materials required for traditional masonry construction and their inherent handling problems. The components - floors and load-bearing walls, with preformed window apertures, combine swiftly to form room shells. Concrete finishes to walls and soffits are of good quality as a result of their production in steel moulds and allow for minimum plastering or finishing with directly applied coatings.
