Rooflights or roof windows are an area of glazing in a roof, either an opening light, a fixed light, or simple roof window sheet. Rooflights or roof windows can be a barrel light, domelight, lantern, monitor, northlight, patent glazing, or saucer dome. A domelight is a a roof window in one piece in the shape of a dome, usually about 1.50 m diameter and made of cast glass or moulded translucent plastic.

Velux is a leading manufacturer of rooflights. Velux rooflights are manufactured from Nordic pine, with an external skin of grey coloured aluminium. The timber is treated with a preservative which is water based and is painted with a clear lacquer. At the head of each rooflight there is a ventilation flap; this allows the ingress of fresh air to the room without having to open the main rooflight. The ventilation flap has a wire mesh screen within it to keep out insects. Special blinds are available for fitting to Velux rooflights. The rooflights can be turned around and locked to allow the outside surface to be cleaned from the inside of the room. Centre pivot rooflights from Velux can be fitted to roofs with slopes of between fifteen and ninety percent. Electric operation, with remote control, is available.
