ABOUT SUSPENDED CEILINGS

Suspended ceilings are usually of fully dry construction, and are carried by the floor above them on hangers fixed to the slab soffit. The suspended ceiling hangers support a lightweight grid of galvanized steel or aluminium main runners and cross runners. These stiffen the suspended ceiling, which is normally of laid-in tiles, removable for access. A suspended ceiling may be simply a false ceiling, but more often hides building services such as air conditioning ducts and plumbing pipes, and is integrated with the lighting fittings and air outlets and inlets. Sometimes a suspended ceiling improves the fire resistance of the floor above or its sound insulation, if solid and free of gaps.

Surfaces for suspended ceilings are available in a very wide variety of materials. The commonest type of suspended ceiling surface is mineral fibre tiles; plaster tiles and plasterboard slabs are also used. Perforated metal strips with an absorbent quilt backing can absorb as much sound as an acoustic tile suspended ceiling and, like open grid cell suspended ceilings, are very light and need few supports.
