ABOUT TERRAZZO
Terrazo originated in Italy, and has been used there since the sixteenth century. During the eighteenth century terrazzo craftsmen spread out from Italy to bring the technique to many western countries. Wooden templates were used to create complex floral and geometrical designs. After the Second World War, terrazzo laying took great forward strides, thanks to machines which greatly speeded the process. Terrazzo also started to be manufactured in pre-fabricated panels, made in a factory and delivered on site.
Terrazzo is made by laying a layer of coloured cement, about twenty millimetres thick, onto which marble chippings are applied. Grinding and washing then produces the characteristic smooth terrazzo surface.
