ABOUT TIMBER STAIRS AND STAIRCASES
Timber stairs or staircases are a series of steps with or without landings, including necessary timber stair handrails and balustrades, for access between different floors or levels. Timber stairs with straight flights may have a dogleg, less often a double return, although timber staircase flights can be geometric or spiral. Minimum recommended dimensions of timber stairs for houses are 900mm overall width, a rise of each tread of 2400mm, and a going of 215mm. In a straight flight of timber stairs twice the rise plus the going should not add up to more than 700mm, nor less than 550mm.
Stair clearance is the distance, measured at right angles, from the nosing line of a stair to the ceiling or to any beams. It is required in addition to the vertical headroom. Stair clearance should be at least 1.50m, the minimum for a tall person hurrying downstairs.
