ABOUT AIR CONDITIONING

The first applications of air conditioning were for industrial purposes rather than for comfort in the home. The electrical air conditioning system was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier. He developed an air conditioning system for a printing works in Syracuse, New York. It aided the industrial process by controlling both the temperature and humidity of the air.

For residential purposes there are two main types of air conditioner: those that provide cooling only, and 'heat pump' systems which can be reversed to provide heating in cold weather. Such systems may be installed in single rooms, or may use a central system with ducting to serve several rooms. Portable air conditioners are of two types: hose and split. The Hose type has all the equipment in a single unit, with a hose to the exterior. The split type comprises two units: one within the room and one outside the room.
