ABOUT CHEST FREEZERS

There are two types of freezers: upright and chest. An upright freezer is similar to a refrigerator, with a door at the front. A chest freezer is wider than it is high, and has a hinged lid on the top.

The advantages of upright freezers are that the lighted interior and separate shelves make it easier to organize the food, and make it easy to see what you have. The advantages of chest freezers are that they are more energy efficient, they are less expensive, and they retain cold better during a power cut. The reason they are more energy efficient is that cold air tends to sink, and thus stays in the chest freezer even when the lid is lifted. By comparison, the cold air in an upright freezer will tend to fall out of the freezer when the door is opened.
