ABOUT HOUSE SIDING
House siding is the external wall surface applied to timber framed houses. House siding may also be applied, for rain protection and decorative purposes, to houses whose walls are built from solid materials such as concrete blocks. The traditional form of house siding is wood, of which the most commonly used type is Cedar. Alternative materials for house siding include fiber cement, plastic, aluminum, steel, and concrete.
Wood siding is available in a wide range of profiles, of which the simplest is the traditional overlapping horizontal clapboard. Other profiles include 'board and batten', in which wide boards are fixed vertically, with narrower boards applied over these to cover the joints. Wood siding is available pre-primed, pre-painted, and pre-stained. The advantage of applying these finishes in the factory is that the amount of on-site work is greatly reduced, and the boards are coated on all six sides under controlled conditions. Aluminum, steel, fiber cement, and plastic siding have some practical advantages compared to wood siding in terms of maintenance, but they do not provide the authentic look and feel of wood siding.
