ABOUT MINERAL WOOL INSULATION
Mineral wool refers to fibers made from minerals or metal oxides, either natural or synthetic. The source materials may be fiber glass, ceramic fibers, or rock wool, sometimes known as stone wool. Stone wool is a furnace produced of molten stone, at a temperature of about 1600 degrees Centigrade, through which a stream of air or steam is blown. Alternatively, molten rock may be spun on high speed spinning wheels, in a process similar to that used for making candy floss at the fair. Mineral wool may contain a binder, often food grade starch, and an oil to reduce dusting.
Precautions need to be taken when handling a fiber product such as mineral wool. This is because the fibers can be absorbed into the body by inhalation. They can also irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
