ABOUT ROLL ROOFING

Roll roofing is the common term for asphalt saturated felt roofing, supplied in rolls. Roll roofing should be stored in a dry location, and should always be stored with the rolls on end. If roll roofing is stored on its side the rolls will flatten out and crack. It is not good practice to install asphalt roll roofing at temperatures below 45 degrees. If the roll roofing has been stored at temperatures below 45 degrees, the roll should be warmed to avoid cracking. It should then be cut into lengths of around 18 feet, which should be stacked flat in a pile to flatten out.

To provide a durable roof, it is recommended to use two layers of roll roofing, with the nails concealed. Roll roofing should be applied over clean, dry plywood, with the sheets running parallel to the eaves. All selvage laps and end laps should be sealed with roofing cement. Roll roofing can be applied to any roof that has a slope of at least 1 in 12.

For maximum product life, GAF recommends using the concealed nail method of application, and a double layer of roll roofing. GAF roll roofing can be applied on any slope of more than one inch per foot.
