ABOUT ROOF SHINGLES
Roof shingles are usually made from either asphalt or wood. There are two main types of roof shingle: wood roof shingles and asphalt roof shingles.
Asphalt roof shingles are made in three main forms: organic asphalt roof shingles, laminated organic roof asphalt shingles, and fiberglass asphalt roof shingles. Most wood roof shingles are made from Western Red Cedar. Wood roof shingles may be Handsplit and Resawn, Tapersplit, Straight-split, or Tapersawn. Hip and Ridge Units are also available. The term Shakes is used to for more rustic, rough-hewn roof shingles. Shingles and Shakes come in varying lengths, usually sixteen, eighteen or twenty four inches, and are usually supplied in random widths.

Organic asphalt roof shingles are manufactured from paper or felt saturated with asphalt to make it proof against water. A top coating is applied, and ceramic granules are then embedded. The granules may contain a some copper or tin to deter moss growth on the roof. Laminated asphalt roof shingles are manufactured from two separate layers. They are heavier, more expensive, and more hardwearing than standard organic asphalt shingles.
Fiberglass asphalt roof shingles are based on a fiberglass mat, to which is added asphalt with mineral fillers. Fiberglass reinforcement was invented as a replacement for old-fashioned asbestos paper reinforcement.
