ABOUT RUBBER ROOFING
Rubber Roofing is normally made from EPDM synthetic rubber. EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. It is an elastomer, which has a wide range of industrial applications, including roofing membranes. EPDM has the following advantageous characteristics as a roofing material: cyclical membrane fatigue resistance; high resistance to ozone, weathering and abrasion; flexibility in low temperatures, and thermal shock durability.
Synthetic Rubber Roofing may be applied in sheets, or in molded shingles. It is available in sheets up to 50 feet wide and 100 feet long, making joints unnecessary for most applications. EPDM may also be applied as liquid rubber, to re-cover existing roofs made from concrete, EPDM, or steel.
LEADING USA RUBBER ROOFING MANUFACTURERS
The following leading rubber roofing manufacturers have comprehensive websites, with information on all aspects of rubber roofing, including online catalogs, colors and materials for rubber roofing, and care and maintenance of rubber roofing.
Rubbur Concepts: Rubber Roofing. Rubbur Concepts is located in Iowa City, Iowa. It sells simulated rubber roofing products manufactuered by Hi-Tek Rubber Inc. The rubber roofing is made from polymers mixed with shredded scrap rubber from motor car tires. To provide colored shingles, a top layer of EDPM synthetic rubber is vulcanized onto a base rubber shingle made from recycled tires. The rubber shingles are produced in a 3 tab design. They give good protection from storms, high winds, and wild fires. They are also resistant to attack from termites, pests, and rot.
Pro Guard: Rubber Roofing. Pro Guard, based in Denver, Pennsylvania, supplies a range of liquid synthetic rubber EPDM coatings. Its EPDM Liquid Rubber coating comes in three colors. It is designed to work well in sub zero temperatures. It withstands ponding water and total immersion. It provides a seamless, single coat, roof coating which can be applied up to six times thicker than standard elastomeric coatings. Liquid Rubber can be used to re-coat EPDM roof membranes, troweled concrete, foam, and weathered metal roofing. It can be applied lightly rusted surfaces without a primer.
Flat Roof Solutions: Rubber Roofing. Flat Roof Solutions specializes in residential and smaller commercial applications of EPDM synthetic rubber roofing. Black EPDM is a flexible rubber material available as a roofing membrance. It is available in 45 mil (about the thickness of a dime), 60 mil, and 90 mil. It is sold in sheets up to 50 feet wide and 100 feet long, making seams unnecessary for most projects. Black EPDM can withstand long term exposure to water, ultraviolet radiation, ozone, heat, and thermal cycling. The website contains guidance on seaming and installation.
