ABOUT STAIR GATES

Stair Gates are a safety device designed to prevent small children going up or down flights of stairs. They are designed to fit a range of openings, with either pressure or hardware fixing. They may be made of wood, metal, or soft materials. Stair gates are also available which are made of a metal frame with clear plastic panels to provide an unobstructed view.

Stair gates are easily fitted, particularly if the pressure type of fixing is selected. This presses outward on the wall of the opening, so no screws or other physical fixings are required. Their catches are designed for simple one-handed operation by adults, but are too difficult for a small child to open.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association operates a certification program for children's products including Stair Gates.
