ABOUT SWIMMING POOL FILTERS

Swimming pool filters are designed to remove debris, including very fine debris, from swimming pools using electric pumps to drive the water through the filter.

There are three main types of swimming pool filter: Sand Filters, Cartridge Filters, and Diatomaceous Earth Filters. Sand Filters must be backwashed (being run in reverse) every few weeks to remove the water waste. Cartridge Filters have a greater surface area than sand, and allow for fewer clogs and easier maintenance. Whereas a Sand Filter will trap debris as small as 20 to 40 microns, Cartridge Filters will trap debris as small ast 10 to 15 microns. Diatomaceous Earth Filters use a mineral which is mined and is made from the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. These are used to coat grids in the filter housing, and act as sieves removing debris as small as 5 microns.
