ABOUT WATER PUMPS
Portable water pumps are usually powered by four stroke petrol engines. They can be used to control flooding, for irrigation, and for emptying swimming pools. Other water pumps, for example for use in central heating systems and for submersible use in wells and sumps, are powered by electricity.
Submersible water pumps are used for lifting water from wells and sumps. Because they push the water up rather than sucking it up, they are not limited in depth by atmospheric pressure. They are normally fitted within a cast iron casing, coated with epoxy for waterproofing. They have permanent lubrication systems.
Pedestal water pumps can be used for lifting water from shallow sumps. These have a metal shaft connecting the motor (at the top) with the pump (which is below the surface of the water.
